KNOPF Origin of surname

KNOPF, KNOPFER

Surnames derive from one of many different origins. Sometimes there may be more than one explanation for the same name. This family name derives from an occupation, profession or trade (also connected with raw material, finished product or implements associated with that trade).

Knopf is the German for "button" and "knob". The surname can be associated with producers, dealers or users of these items. The German and Yiddish suffix "-er" is common in occupational surnames. Other related family names are: Knopfmacher, the German for "button maker", recorded as a Jewish family name with Hirschel Knopfmacher of Prague, Bohemia, who visited the Leipzig (Germany) fair in the years 1722-25 and again 1727-33.

Distinguished bearers of the Jewish surname Knopf include the German-born American physiotherapist, educator and tuberculosis expert Sigismund Adolf Knopf; the 20th century American publisher Alfred A. Knopf; and the 20th century American psychologist and educator Irwin Jay Knopf.

Naum Knop(1917-1993), sculptor, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a child he made sculptures from pieces of wood which he found in his father's furniture workshop. Later he turned to designing furniture. In 1935 he attended the Buenos Aires College of Fine Arts. His sculptures are often in large, painted wood, but also in metal or stone on which he designed sensual forms which impacted on their strength, ease and freedom. One of his most important works was placed on the covered patio of the Centro Cultural General San Martín (1967) and others of his best known sculptures line the walls of the ORT school murals and the AMIA Palace of Education.

In 1964 he was awarded the Grand Prix d'Honneur at the National Salon of Plastic Arts. He took part in numerous exhibitions in Argentina and also in Rome, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and cities in the United States and Germany.
