WEKSLER Origin of surname
Surnames derive from one of many different origins. Sometimes there may be more than one explanation for the same name. This family name derives from an occupation (also connected with raw material, finished product or implements associated with that trade).
Wechsler means "money-changer" in German. Jews who were engaged in this occupation in the Diaspora made a considerable contribution to the development of the modern banking system.
Distinguished 20th century bearers of the German Jewish name Wechsler include the Polish-born film producer Lazar Wechsler; the American politician, journalist and author James Wechsler; and the Romanian and French poet Benjamin Wechsler (1898-1944), also known as Fundoianu and Fondane. Wechselmann is recorded as a Jewish family name in early 20th century Germany with the soldiers Emil, Hermann and Ludwig Wechselmann, who died in World War I. Vecsler is documented as a Jewish surname in the 19th century with the soldier Avram Vecsler who fought in Romania's war of independence in 1877. In the 20th century Wechsler is recorded as a Jewish family name with the Wechsler family, who lived in the town of Zhadova (Jadova) near Chernowitz, northern Bukovina (now Ukraine), prior to World War II (1939-1945), and whose entire Jewish community was deported to the death camps in July 1941.
