Rosina Lhevinne

Rosina Lhevinne (born Rosina Bessi) (1880-1976), pianist, born in Kiev, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire). She married pianist Josef Lhevinne in 1898, shortly after her graduation from the Moscow Conservatory. She almost gave up her own career in order to assist him with his teaching and appearances. Nevertheless, she gave numerous recitals with her husband. The couple settled in the USA in 1906 but went back to Berlin in 1907, returning to the USA in 1919. From 1938 Rosina Lhevinne taught at the Juilliard Graduate School in New York. Among her pupils were John Browning, Van Cliburn and James Levine. On occasion she performed publicly as a soloist, the last time in 1962. She died in Glendale, California.
