Otto Jaffe
Otto Jaffe (1846-1929) Sir and industrialist. Born in Hamburg, Germany, he was taken as a child to Belfast, Ireland, where his father had founded the Jewish community and established a linen business. Otto Jaffe was in New York from 1865 to 1877 and then assumed direction of the family firm, which he made into one of the main industrial concerns in Northern Ireland and the largest linen exporter to Europe. Jaffe was Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1899 and 1904 and High Sheriff in 1901. He headed the Jewish community and made many benefactions to the city. However when World War 1 broke out he became the object of widespread hostility because of his German origin and moved with his family to England.
