Notes:
My grandfather Zeider), Jacob Kolnik, was a remarkable man. I think hemay have particpated briefly in WW1, in the Russian army, beforesuccessfully deserting and fleeing to Lithuania/Poland. I spent a yearwith my grandparents in 1968 in Cape Town. He once got very angry when wewere arguing about apartheid (and my opposition) and said I should leavepolitics to others, who would undoubtedly be shot. I suspect this wasbased on his experiences during the war and Russian revolution. He was asmall man with a fierce temper, and I suspect that much of the Kolnikfamily's disfunctional behaviour is due to him. He had dark skin, whichdescendants like Yaara, Tammy, Sharon, and others inherited. He once gotangry with me because I said he looked Chinese, and wondered if we hadlived near China, but, in fact, he did look rather like a Chinese person. He rejected religion later in life, but was very knowledgeable and lovedto read Jewish history and held the family seder every year, enjoyinghaving his five children and fifteen grandchildren piled into one room. He arrived in South Africa with nothing, and died a relatively wealthyperson.
