His full Hebrew name is *Moshe Alter Chaim ben Nochim*.
Subsequent to his Graduate Work at the University of New Brunswick, he was a PhD candidate at McGill University working on Synthetic Rubber Research. His wife Rita at that time was recovering from a six month stay at the TB hospital in Prefontaine, QC when she suffered a relapse. Medicare was not yet in existence and he had to leave his graduate work because of mounting debts. Fortunately, his supervising Professor, found him a job in Ottawa.
His drive and ambition was such that he became very active in the Chemistry Community, became a Professor at St. Patrick's College, which at that time was a constituent College of the University of Ottawa. He was subsequently one of a team of academics who established the Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ottawa. He eventually became Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, then Chairman of the group Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Medical Technology Programs, and finally Dean of the Division of Technology and Trades programs.
Maurice graduated from Sir George Williams University in 1946 with a B.
Sc., majoring in Organic Chemistry.
In 1970, Maurice was elected a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.
In 1979, post-retirement, Maurice was awarded the Polystar Award by the
Chemical Institute of Canada for "Outstanding Chemistry Teaching in
Community and Technical Colleges".
