Jewish Community
The first documented Jew who arrived in Fiji was Alexander Schmerrill Bowman aka Alexander ben Shmuel (1847-1909), a native of Pila, Poland (then called Schneidemuhle in Prussia). He settled in Levuka, the former Capital of Fiji, where he married Sara Annette Solomon, a native of Auckland, New Zealand. Bowman run the Bowman and Abrahams company. The couple left Fiji and settled in Sydney, where they passed away.
Henry Marks, a 20 year old entrepreneur arrived from Australia in 1881. Marks established one of the most extensive commercial enterprises in the Western Pacific. Later additional Jews from India and Middle East settled in Fiji. Most Jews live in Suva, the capital city. For most of the 20th century there was no organized Jewish life in Fiji. Estimated Jewish population in 2018 was less than 100 out of 910,000.
There are three Jewish cemeteries in Fiji: one in Levuka (Ovalau Island), the old Jewish cemetery in Suva, and a private cemetery in Momi, on the western coast of the island of Fiji.
